GREENVILLE, VA – Virginia State Patrol said a driver of a tanker truck suffered a medical emergency, leading them to sideswipe another vehicle on I-81 South Monday.
According to WHSV, the collision happened around 10 a.m. and ended in the truck crashing into the median, leaking ammonia from the tanker truck. The nature of the wreck had prompted crews to shut down all of the northbound and southbound lanes.
Virginia Department of Transportation crews said the area is expected to be closed for several hours and have not announced any reopening of lanes. At this time, drivers are advised to seek alternative routes. In the northbound directions, drivers could exit off Exit 205, taking Route 606, and then taking Route 11 before taking Exit 213. In the southbound direction, commuters could take Exit 213 near Greenville, take Route 11 to Route 606, and then I-81 at Exit 205.
