NEAR PLANT CITY, FL – A big rig jackknifed, an ambulance overturned, and a 64-year-old woman later lost her life following a Friday night collision.
WTSP said the events unfolded after 11:30 p.m., when the ambulance driver, 26, drove east on McGee Road and collided with the big rig driver going north on FL 39.
The semi-truck’s front cab sustained significant damage, but the driver was spared from physical harm.
Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the ambulance was the property of Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. The 64-year-old woman was a patient inside the ambulance, on her way to the hospital when the wreck happened.
Other EMS personnel rushed the woman, the ambulance driver, and another medic, 47, who was with the ambulance operator, to a hospital. The woman later perished while these first responders were recovering from lacerations deemed non-life-threatening.
