NEAR MACEDONIA, SC – A driver of a tractor-trailer had failed to reduce his speed to slowed I-85 traffic and rear-ended another big rig, causing a fatal fiery crash Thursday.
WYFF4 said events unfolded before 4 a.m. on the southbound lanes. After the first truck struck the second semi, the first semi truck’s fuel tank ruptured, which is what caused the fire. The first motorist went on to succumb to his injuries. The Cherokee County Coroner has identified the victim as 37-year-old Quinton Lanier Hightower from McDonough, Georgia.
Fire crews rushed to the scene and extinguished the flames. It’s unclear if the second driver was harmed.
