COVINGTON, LA – A car driver rear-ended a Winget’s Disposal trash truck, leading one of the garbage truck employees, a 26-year-old man, to his death Friday.
This incident unfolded around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Lee Road and Royal Pine Drive while the 26-year-old man and his co-worker were picking up some garbage on their morning route, WWLTV reports. The 26-year-old man, later identified as Benjamin Bonura, an Amite resident, was on the back of the truck when the driver of the blue Hyundai Elantra slammed into the back of the truck. The impact left Bonura pinned between the two vehicles and immediately led him to succumb to fatal wounds.
Bonura’s co-worker, who operated the truck, appeared to have been unscathed, while the car driver, who will be facing criminal charges, sustained injuries deemed “moderate” and required a trip to the hospital.
Louisiana State Patrol and fire crews responded to the scene. No other details have been provided at this time.
