POLK COUNTY, FL – A 24-year-old woman lost her life Tuesday night due to a collision involving a semi-truck in Bartow, according to ABC Action News.
The fatal wreck took place on the southbound side of U.S. Highway 17 at the intersection with Ernest Smith Boulevard.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was operating a 2013 Honda CRV southbound when she ran the red light at the intersection. Moments later, the car slammed into the back of an unloaded 2019 Freightliner semi-truck that was stopped at the light.
The impact of the collision sent the SUV spinning 90 degrees before it came to rest in the right-turn lane.
Polk County Fire Rescue crews had to extricate the woman and her daughter, a 1-year-old baby, from the SUV by cutting into the vehicle.
While the young child was flown to a Tampa hospital for minor injuries and is anticipated to recover, the woman was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital.
No injuries to the 36-year-old semi driver were reported.
