HOOVER, AL – A tractor-trailer driver hit some vehicles on I-459 South, causing the truck to overturn and strike a second big rig, resulting in at least four people sustaining minor wounds.
This collision occurred around 3 p.m. near mile marker 16, according to WVTM13. The Rocky Ridge Fire Department, who were among the first responders, said the first truck nearly struck the second 18-wheeler head-on. While the vehicles did not collide head-on, they still made contact, which trapped one of the truck drivers, and caused one gas tank to catch on fire.
Fire crews were able to successfully extricate the entrapped driver and hazmat workers were able to clean up the small diesel fuel spill that came from one of the trucks and gone onto the road.
While first responders did not provide an update on the physical conditions of the occupants, they said that at least four people suffered minor wounds.
Authorities shut down the north and southbound lanes for an hour. Southbound lanes were reopened by 7:55 p.m. and northbound ones by 8:30 p.m.
