OAKLAND PARK, FL – A tanker truck driver lost control of the vehicle, leading the truck to overturn, which ended in a massive diesel fuel spill and a trip to the hospital Tuesday.
The event took place somewhere on Andrews Avenue between Commercial Boulevard and 53rd Court, according to NBCMiami. Authorities said the driver was close to striking two homes, but fortunately missed. Still the occupants of those homes had to evacuate for precautionary measures.
Authorities said the truck spilled 1,100 gallons of diesel fuel and an additional 2,000 from the truck.
Since hazmat and Oakland fire crews were both summoned to the area, they pursued aggressive measures to clean up the area and restore road conditions.
Before the overturned truck was stabilized and towed away from the scene, hazmat personnel had to pump all of the spilled fuel and transfer it into a different truck while fire crews drilled holes to drain the fuel and sprayed this fire retardant foam substance that would keep the truck from potentially combusting.
Once the spray was issued, crews put dry ice inside the tank to create carbon dioxide, which limited residual vapors.
Despite the serious nature of this wreck, the driver is expected to be okay and is recovering from minor wounds.
Amid the scene clearance procedure, as expected, the area was closed, and during that time, drivers were redirected to Northwest 9th Avenue. Closures lasted well past noon and have since cleared.
