Rear-end crash in Riegelwood claims life of log truck driver

NEAR RIEGELWOOD, NC – A log truck driver died from his injuries when he was pierced by a log that crashed into his windshield after a rear-end crash Wednesday.

The Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Department told WITN that the events unfolded when the driver of a white ISUZU hit the back of the log truck on NC 87 as the log truck was pursuing a turn into the International Paper Mill.

When the trucks collided, the box truck’s windshield got completely shattered, and the three-inch long in diameter shoved its way into the log truck’s left side of his stomach.

Local fire crews had to cut off the log with a chainsaw and cut off the roof of the car in order to free the log truck driver. Paramedics immediately rushed the driver to  Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he passed away around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. His identity has not been disclosed at this time.

Authorities did not say if the box truck driver, a Fayetteville resident, was injured or would face citations or criminal charges for not yielding or reducing their speed.

Updates will be provided as new details surface.
