1 killed, 6 hospitalized after St. Pete pursuit-wreck with box truck

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Six people sustained non-life-threatening wounds, and one person died after a pursuit that ended in a multi-vehicle crash, which included a box truck.

The events unfolded before 3 a.m. Saturday when a driver of a Toyota Camry had gone over a U.S. 19 South median near Seville Boulevard, IONTB.com reported.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop the Camry driver. However, the motorist declined to listen and continued on their way. This act of disobedience prompted the trooper to pursue the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver in an attempt to stop the driver at once. This act did not work, and the Camry driver continued until they crashed into a Toyota Tundra and a box truck waiting at a red light on 34th Street.

Before the Camry driver collided with the Tundra and box truck, they swerved off 38th Avenue to try to avoid striking a semi-truck (going east) and turning on 34th Street.

Troopers said there were four occupants inside the Toyota Camry. They have not confirmed who drove but said one of the passengers was sent to a hospital, where they later succumbed to fatal wounds.

FHP said the box truck driver, a 33-year-old man from Davenport, the Toyota Tundra motorist, a 46-year-old man from St. Petersburg, and the Tundra passenger, a 73-year-old adult, and the three surviving individuals from the Camry, ages 18 to 20, were all hospitalized for the non-critical injuries.

Authorities started an investigation and have not announced any criminal charges.
