GULFPORT, MS – A driver of a tractor-trailer was able to escape injuries after attempting to go over some railroad tracks and colliding with a train Thursday morning.
The Sun Herald said the events of this collision unfolded before 7:30 a.m. in the vicinity of 33rd Avenue and West Railroad Street when the truck itself became stuck on the tracks after the driver tried to cross the railroad tracks despite a “Low Ground Clearance” sign made for large trucks and other automobiles. Since the truck could not move, the train conductor was unable to avoid striking the truck.
Despite the serious nature of this wreck, the truck driver was unharmed because they managed to evaluate their vehicle prior to the truck getting hit.
Following the collision, police shut down the area for a significant part of the day until they reopened the intersection by 3 p.m. when crews were finally able to clear the scene.
CSX Transportation was also called to the scene to investigate the collision. They, along with the police, did not release other information.
