Tractor-trailer wreck, hazmat spill blocks lane on I-81 in Abingdon

WASHINGTON COUNTY, VA – Virginia State Police responded to a tractor-trailer accident and hazmat incident Sunday afternoon, July 21, on Interstate 81 in Abingdon, reports WJHL.

The accident happened on the northbound highway near mile marker 12, south of Spring Creek Road. It was first reported at around 2:32 p.m.

Preliminary details indicate that one of the big rig’s tires blew out, causing the truck to run off the roadway and collide with a guardrail before coming to a stop in the left lane.

Officials said the crash was identified as a “hazmat incident” because the truck lost diesel fuel because of damage sustained in the wreck.

Due to a temporary closure of the left lane and left shoulder, a traffic backup up to five miles long formed in the area.

No one was reported hurt following the collision.
