5 dead following crash involving three big rigs on I-95 in Wilson County

WILSON COUNTY, NC – A multi-vehicle wreck involving three tractor-trailers Wednesday afternoon in the town of Lucama claimed the lives of five people, reports ABC11.

The fatal accident happened near mile marker 113, shortly before 1:30 p.m.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, one tractor-trailer carrying oranges struck two SUVs, as well as another tractor-trailer transporting eggs, sending the second big rig off the roadway and into a ditch. At one point, a third big rig carrying sand was also struck, though the exact circumstances were not immediately clear.

The impact of the initial crash caused the first tractor-trailer to become engulfed in flames.

Five people were pronounced deceased as a result of the crashes, and at least three patients were transported to Wilson Medical Center for unspecified injuries.

The cause of the wreck has not been publicly identified, but investigators have indicated that the driver of the first tractor-trailer faces charges.
