CAMPBELL COUNTY, VA – Two people, including a young child, died as a result of a head-on crash involving a tractor-trailer Monday morning near Gladys, reports ABC 13 News.
According to Virginia State Police (VSP), the two-vehicle wreck occurred in the 10900 block of Brookneal Highway (State Route 501), shortly before 8:30 a.m.
A preliminary investigation found that a 26-year-old was driving a Kia Forte southbound on the highway, under heavy rainfall, when the car hydroplaned and entered the northbound lanes. Moments later, it collided head-on with a big rig.
Officials said the driver of the Forte and her passenger, a 5-year-old girl, both died from their injuries at the scene. Both occupants were found to have been properly secured by a seatbelt and in an appropriate a car seat, respectively.
First responders had the driver of the semi transported to a local hospital for injuries considered non-life-threatening.
