WILLIAMSTON, NC – A driver of a 2012 Chevrolet car traveled at a high rate and crashed into a parked big rig, leading the car to catch fire and claiming the car passenger’s life last Friday.
This collision happened before 7 a.m. at Jones Road along Holly Springs Church Road, WNCT reported.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the big rig, a 2019 Kenworth tractor-trailer lowboy, was partially in the roadway. After the car made contact with the truck, the driver — 36-year-old Linnel Outlaw from Williamston, freed himself from the car as it caught fire. The passenger, identified as 42-year-old Krystal Whitely, was not able to escape from the car and perished on site.
The truck driver, 63-year-old Richard Thomas from Stokes, was unharmed. As such, first responders did not need to take Thomas to the hospital but did transport Outlaw to ECU Health in Washington.
Outlaw was set to receive treatment for non-life-threatening wounds and “has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Failing to Reduce Speed.”
