5 killed, 1 hurt in Maverick Co. head-on wreck with FedEx truck

MAVERICK CO., TX – Five people lost their lives Tuesday night, May 28, due to a head-on collision involving a FedEx Truck about nine miles east of Eagle Pass.

KLTV said this collision happened on U.S. 57 East when, for reasons not immediately unclear, an eastbound FedEx truck drifted into the opposite lane and continued traveling in the wrong direction before striking the SUV head-on.

The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene and declared all of the SUV’s five occupants dead at the scene. Troopers identified four of the victims as 25-year-old Samantha Martinez, 34-year-old Joanna Martinez, 61-year-old Noemi Jimenez Martinez, and 71-year-old Jose Martinez. The fifth person, a 10-year-old girl who was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries en route, was not named. 

Emergency crews did not provide information on the condition of the truck driver. 

An investigation was underway.
