POLK COUNTY, FL — A 56-year-old local man lost his life early Monday following a collision involving a semi-truck on U.S. Highway 92 in Lakeland, reports WFLA.
The fatal accident unfolded on a stretch of the highway (New Tampa Highway) at Clark Road, prompting a response from Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 2:32 a.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the victim was operating a gray 2013 Volkswagen Jetta northbound and at high speed on Clark Road when he ran a red light. Moments later, the Volkswagen collided with the passenger side of the semi and became stuck under its trailer, before the rear axles.
Authorities said the victim was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The driver of the semi, a man from Tifton, Georgia, was not reported hurt.
Part of the eastbound highway was shut down for nearly five hours as officials conducted an investigation.
According to the PCSO, both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck, and no charges are expected to be filed.
