Outages reported after semi hits power lines off US-41 in North Fort Myers

LEE COUNTY, FL — Authorities responded to a semi-truck accident Monday morning off U.S. Highway 41 that caused a number of power outages in North Fort Myers, according to WINK.

The incident took place on the northbound lanes of US-41 near Lakeville Drive, at about 5:45 a.m.

A preliminary investigation found that the big rig was carrying waste products from Miami to a recycling facility in the area when it traveled off the roadway and jackknifed, coming to rest in a marshy area.

Crews responded to the scene with an excavator and sand to help prevent the spread of debris, which had spilled from the truck during the impact.

An investigation into the cause of the wreck remains ongoing, but WINK reported that the involved truck driver admitted to falling asleep being the wheel.

Because the semi struck a number of power lines before rolling, nearly 1,200 Lee County Electric Company customers in the area experienced electrical outages, but the issue was solved by 6:20 a.m.

No major injuries have been confirmed at this time.
