DUVAL COUNTY, FL — A 61-year-old man from Willis, Texas, lost his life Friday morning after the semi-truck he was driving crashed onto railroad tracks off Interstate 295 in Jacksonville, reports Action News Jax.
The fatal wreck occurred on I-295 at Commonwealth Avenue, prompting an emergency response shortly after 10:41 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man’s truck traveled off the roadway and down an embankment before landing on the tracks. Witnesses said the impact left the semi nearly “unrecognizable.”
First responders rushed the driver and sole occupant to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
All lanes were shut down in the area as crews responded to the scene, forcing motorists to divert onto Commonwealth Avenue, but by 3:30 p.m., the right lane was reopened to traffic.
