ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY, GA — A baby who had to be delivered early after a multi-injury crash last Thursday in Athens has died, according to 95.5 WSB.
Athens-Clarke County Police said the accident occurred near Danielsville Road and Mission Drive at around 5:53 p.m.
An early investigation indicates an Amazon delivery truck was traveling southbound when it turned in front of a northbound 1996 Ford Ranger. Moments later, the pickup slammed into the truck.
Helen Edwards, 41, who was a passenger in the truck and who was pregnant, was rushed to an area hospital. Authorities said doctors had to deliver her baby early, and that both mother and child were moved to the intensive care unit. On the following Saturday, the baby was pronounced deceased.
While Edwards remains hospitalized, the driver of the pickup was treated for minor injuries.
Athen Police said that they are now investigating the crash as a homicide-by-vehicle. As of this writing, no charges have been reported.
