Fiery big rig crash off US-80 in Lowndes County claims driver’s life

LOWNDES COUNTY, AL — A 39-year-old Abbeville resident died last Wednesday, December 27, after crashing a tractor-trailer off U.S. Highway 80 in Lowndesboro, according to WSFA 12.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the fatal wreck occurred on the eastbound highway near mile marker 119, just before Dove Drive and Calvary Church. It was first reported just before 12:00 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates the victim, Kevin T. Guilford, was operating a 2018 Volvo semi-truck when the vehicle veered off the roadway and hit a commercial vehicle. It then slammed into a metal structure and became engulfed in fire.

Guilford, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the 18-wheeler and suffered fatal injuries. First responders pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Officials noted that the commercial vehicle may be listed as property damage in the case.

An investigation by the ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division remains in progress.
