2 hospitalized after fiery big rig vs car crash on I-85 in Anderson County

ANDERSON COUNTY, SC — Two people were sent to the hospital Wednesday night following a fiery tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 85 near Townville, reports WYFF4.

Nearly 60 firefighters with the Townville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene near the 12-mile marker, north of State Highway 24, shortly after 9:00 p.m.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, but preliminary details indicate the big rig was transporting thousands of butane canisters when it was involved in a crash with a passenger car.

Fire department officials said crews arrived to find the semi-truck engulfed in flames, which were intensified by the contents of the trailer, requiring a large supply of water to extinguish. The passenger car was found severely damaged about a hundred yards away.

One person who was extricated from the car was transported by EMS personnel to an area hospital, along with the driver of the 18-wheeler. No information regarding the extent of their injuries has been shared.

An investigation remains underway.
