TAMPA, FL — Four people were hurt, one seriously, due to a chain-reaction crash during the Wednesday morning commute in Tampa, according to News Channel 8.
Florida Highway Patrol officials say the events unfolded on southbound Interstate 275 near North Armenia Avenue, in the city’s Old West Tampa area. First responders were dispatched to the scene some time after 7:43 a.m.
Preliminary details indicate that a Ford F250 pickup truck failed to slow down in time as it approached slowing traffic, causing it to be rear-ended by a Ford F150. Both pickups were sent crashing into a concrete wall along the shoulder before the F150 re-entered traffic and hit a Dodge Challenger and then a Kenworth dump truck. The force of that crash caused both vehicles to flip, leaving the dump truck overturned, with sand and diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway.
Authorities said the driver of the F150 suffered significant injuries, while the other three drivers reported minor injuries. No information regarding hospital transports or patient conditions has been shared.
Only one southbound lane was left open for about three hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
