Driver rescued tractor-trailer overturns, catches fire on I-85 in Macon County

MACON COUNTY, AL — Several motorists stopped to assist a driver out of a big rig Wednesday night following a fiery rollover crash near north Tuskegee, reports WSFA.

The accident happened on the southbound lanes of I-85, between mile markers 38 and 39, just after 10:00 p.m.

While the sequence of events leading up to the crash remains unknown, Macon County EMA Director Frank Lee said the driver of the semi was able to safely exit the wrecked vehicle with support from other motorists.

All southbound lanes were shut down during the emergency response, causing lengthy traffic backups on the interstate, with multiple vehicles, many of them commercial carriers, running out of fuel.

No information regarding the driver’s condition has been made available.
