NASHVILLE, TN — A 20-year-old Antioch man has been identified as the driver who died last Tuesday, November 21, after a car versus semi-truck wreck on Interstate 40 east of downtown Nashville, reports WKRN.
The accident happened at mile marker 212, near Hermitage Avenue, shortly after 1:00 a.m. on November 21.
According to a preliminary investigation, the young man was driving a stolen Nissan Maxima at a high rate of speed under rainy weather conditions when he tried to pass the a semi-truck on the left. At one point, the Maxima lost control and traveled across all four westbound lanes before running back to the left and becoming trapped under the trailer of the semi.
Officials confirmed that the driver of the Nissan, Damondre Hayes, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
No injuries to the semi driver or anyone else were reported.
Metro Police later reported that they recovered two firearms–“an AR-15 style rifle and a loaded semi-automatic pistol with a 50-round drum magazine”–from the passenger car. Investigators have been able to confirm that one of the weapons was reported stolen on November 9, out of Murfreesboro.
All westbound lanes of I-40 were shut down during the emergency response and investigation, which remains ongoing.
