Pickup truck slams into Margate business following parking lot crash

BROWARD COUNTY, FL — Eight people were hurt Saturday night when a pickup truck crashed into the GameStop store at Margate’s Lakewood Shopping Center, reports NBC Miami.

A surveillance camera captured the incident unfolding in the shopping plaza’s parking lot off State Road 7 and Atlantic Boulevard.

According to Margate Police, a Margate Parks and Recreation pickup truck and another vehicle were involved in a minor wreck near the store. At one point, the driver of the pickup mistook their accelerator for the brake, causing the vehicle to run through the parking lot and nearly hit a pedestrian before it struck the building.

Four people, including two in critical condition, were rushed to North Broward’s Trauma Center. First responders transported three other patients to HCA Northwest Hospital with relatively minor injuries. One other person who reported minor injuries was treated and released at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that as of Monday, five patients have been sent home form the hospital, while two others continue to be listed in critical condition.

Margate Police are handling an investigation. A manager with City of Margate confirmed that the involved Parks and Recreation employee, who was on duty at the time of the crash, is now on administrative leave.
