JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL — Two people suffered injuries early Saturday, March 1, due to a crash involving a big rig on Interstate 59 that also caused a contamination and fish kill in Birmingham, reports AL.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The collision unfolded on the northbound lanes at Exit 133 to Fourth Avenue South, near Roebuck, at about 2:41 a.m. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service members arrived on the scene shortly after.<\/p>\n

While the events leading up to the wreck have not been made public, the tractor-trailer, which collided with an SUV, was found overturned with its driver trapped inside.<\/p>\n

Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles before being transported to UAB for unspecified injuries.<\/p>\n

Several area agencies assisted at the scene, where a large volume of gasoline had spilled onto the roadway. Officials learned the big rig was transporting nearly 7,500 gallons of gasoline when it overturned, though it’s unclear how much of that amount was spilled.<\/p>\n

The spill, which eventually spilled downstream to Village Creek, has resulted in a significant number of fish being killed and has caused a strong odor of gasoline in the body of water.<\/p>\n
