HENRY CLAY TWP, PA – At least three people are dead and another five are injured following a crash involving a semi-truck and two passenger vehicles, CBS reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Police believe that the tractor-trailer was headed east on U.S. 40 when it crossed the center line near near Laurel Road and entered the westbound lanes. The truck collided head-on with an oncoming Ford pickup truck, which in turn hit a Chevrolet Express van.<\/p>\n

The drivers of all three vehicles died at the scene. Five occupants of the van were taken to area hospitals for treatment of unspecified injuries.<\/p>\n

Fayette County’s coroner Dr. Bob Baker responded to the collision and is now calling for a safety review of the road’s design. The portion of the roadway has steep drops and sharp curves, which may make it unsafe for semi-truck traffic, particularly in the absence of adequate signage.<\/p>\n

“This is becoming a public health problem,” Baker told CBS. “It’s going to be my mission to stop all heavy interstate tractor-trailers on this two-lane road.” He also posited that truckers may be trying to avoid high tolls on nearby interstates, opting instead to take the two-lane blacktop that’s unsuitable for modern semis.<\/p>\n
